Careers in fashion and home decor are exciting.


For people who love clothing, colors, fabrics and home decor, there are plenty of exciting job options. They can work in creating fashions for the people, marketing clothing, designing homes and gardens or even writing about these activities. Sometimes, education is necessary in each of the career fields.


Fashion Design


Fashion designers create clothing for the public.


Fashion design can be a lucrative and fun career choice. Fashion designers can design clothes both on a local and broader scales. Whether they open a community clothing store with fashions they've designed themselves or find a job with a major fashion line, they have creative power to design clothing. They put dresses, pants, shirts, purses and other clothing accessories on the market for the public to consume. Some designers start their own companies, while others sell their clothing pieces in retail stores or join a major fashion design house as a staff designer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, fashion designers often attend a two or four year college, studying fabrics, ornamentation, trends and fabrics.


Fashion Merchandisers


Merchandisers work with fashion and sales.


People who want to combine the creative element of creating fashions with the business aspect of fashion sales may want to become fashion merchandisers. According to the Fashion Institute of Technology, fashion merchandisers take the creations that fashion designers have made and market it to the public. Most people in this career field attend college for marketing, fashion merchandising or fashion design.


Interior Decoration


Fashion designers create home aesthetics.


Interior decorators design people's homes and gardens by selecting furniture, aesthetic patterns, color schemes and decor for the rooms and the house as a whole. They often work in schools, hospitals, hotels and other public locations---in addition people's homes. Often, interior designers attain a degree in design or textiles, while others are certified by their states. Some work on a freelance basis or within firms.


Journalist or Editor


Fashion or decor lovers can write about the topic.


People who love interior design or fashion but don't want to work within the fields may elect to become a writer or editor. They may want to work for magazines that focus specifically on interior design, like "Home and Garden" or "Vogue" magazine. These writers and editors write articles about home decor ideas and trends. They often attend college for journalism or English---while other attend college for design or fashion and combine their degree with writing activities.
