Write A Rationale Letter

The quality of your rationale letter can have a lasting impact on your goal.

Writing a rationale letter is an effective and direct way of justifying your actions. By detailing the core reasons for your actions in a rationale letter, you allow a person or organization to understand your intentions from the beginning. It requires tact and practice to convey your intentions, so consider your recipient before you begin writing the letter. That forethought will help you produce a rationale letter that will help you achieve your goal.

Instructions

1. Contact the agency that will receive the rationale letter. Request information about the formatting it requires for your rationale letter, so you have the best chance of getting it reviewed by the corporation. For example, some corporations may appreciate short, concise letters, while others may prefer long, in-depth letters espousing your point.

2. Brainstorm the reasons for your rationale letter. For example, if your letter tackles the reform of the public school system, write the main points you want to address. Your points could be subjects such as school bullying, funding for the arts and the quality of school buildings.

3. Compile a list of benefits gained from your rationale plan. This is a major part of the rationale letter. When writing the letter, you propose methods for bringing the changes that you want, then rationalize each method so your audience sees your point of view.

4. Write your rational letter by starting with a simple greeting to the recipient. State the reason for the letter (for example, state that your letter is in regards to public school reform early in the letter). Follow the greeting and the purpose for the letter with your plan for enacting change and the benefits received through your proposed actions.

5. State your ideas to bring your goal to fruition. Use examples to show how your method would work. Include references to similar projects that had positive results in the past.
