Getting people to fill seats to see your band requires hard work.
Promoting a band has certainly changed over the years, but the change has been for the better. With all the technology available in the early 21st century, fans can now be in closer contact with their favorite musicians than ever before, and that is opening up many new doors for bands seeking exposure. Combining new techniques and old ideas can really benefit a band.
The Internet
In this day and age, the Internet is a vital tool. Build a profile on MySpace, Twitter and Facebook and network with as many people as possible that you think would enjoy what you are offering. This can easily connect you with local promoters, venues and radio stations in your area that may be able to offer you a break. Before heading to an area to play, send out online invites to locals to let them know that you are coming to town. Make sure you offer high-quality band photos and music samples at your performances that fans can enjoy right away. Also, having a band website is a good way to let people experience your work in one easy place.
Festivals and Events
Many festivals and events offer space to up-and-coming bands. One of the best examples of this is the South by Southwest music festival, which is held in Austin, Texas, every year. Hundreds of bands flock to the city fro the festival to play events in several venues for thousands of fans. The event is a big celebrity draw and is also a prime stop for producers and record executives looking for new talent to market. Most of the venues offer free music. The chance to get this much exposure is priceless for band.
Flyers and Postcards
Flyers and postcards have long been a way to get the word out about local events and bands. Strategically place and pass out flyers where you know that your fans or potential listeners will be. College campuses often offer space on bulletin boards, but you may need approval to use them. Shopping malls, local hangouts and telephone poles located near where you are playing are also good places to promote a band. After you perform, be courteous and remove what you have posted.
