Calculate Page Count

Calulating page count will help determine the final cost of a self-published book.

If you're planning to self-publish a book, you'll need to calculate the page count of your manuscript. Most self-publishing companies charge based on the page count of a manuscript. By calculating your page count ahead of time, you'll have a rough estimate of how many pages your final book will be. You can then comparison-shop among self-publishers and figure out what the final cost of your book will be.

Instructions

1. Open your manuscript in your editing software. Go to the "Page Setup" options.

2. Change the page size of the manuscript to the size your final book will be. This is most often 5.5 by 8.5 inches, 6 by 9 inches, or 8 by 10 inches. Change the margins so that they are one inch on the top, bottom, left and right. Make sure that these changes are applied to the whole document.

3. Highlight the entire manuscript. Change the font to Times New Roman in size 12. Font options are usually found on the toolbar at the top of the page. Go to the paragraph formatting options, and change the spacing to single. In most editing programs, the paragraph options are found under "Format."

4. Click anywhere on the manuscript to remove the highlighting. The formatting of the manuscript now looks like it will in book form. Add page numbers to the manuscript. In most editing programs, page numbers can be added under "Insert."
