A granite coffee table adds a stylish and elegant touch to your living room or family room. Buying a manufactured table is expensive, and you have limited options. When you make your own, you have the ability to pick the color of the granite and the type of wood used in the construction. The trick is to make the table strong enough that it supports the weight of the granite and anything else placed on the coffee tabletop. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Lay a 2-feet-by-4-feet-by-1-inch board down on a flat surface. The board acts as the top of your coffee table. Cover the top of the board with a 1-inch thick layer of tile adhesive, spreading the adhesive evenly across the table with a trowel.
2. Arrange the granite tiles on top of the adhesive. Place the tiles side-by-side on the adhesive. Set a level on top of the tiles, making sure that the tiles sit even on the wood. Measure the space not covered by tile. Cut individual tiles to fit the space with a tile saw and lay on the table.
3. Cover the granite tiles with a thin layer of grout, applied with a trowel. While the grout is still wet, rub a damp sponge or cloth across the top. The sponge pulls off any grout sticking to the top of the tiles, while leaving the grout in between.
4. Place a stone polisher attachment onto an orbital sander. Turn the sander on and rub across the edges of the tiles, where the granite meets the edges of the tabletop. Polish the stone, leaving behind a smooth edge.
5. Turn the tabletop upside down and measure 2 inches in from each corner of the table, marking the spot for your table legs. Drill a hole ½-inch deep into the corner. Work your way around the table, drilling a single hole in each corner.
6. Place a screw-in table leg flat against one hole. Screw the leg into the hole until the top of the leg sits flush with the table. Screw-in table legs feature a bolt at the top of the leg. Repeat this step with each of the table legs before using your new coffee table.
