What Is the Title Bar?
The title bar is the bar that runs horizontally across an application window. The title bar will contain either the name of the file--for example, a document you are viewing--or the website you are viewing through your Internet browser. Find out use, customize and install add-ins to title bars.
Features
Title bars feature icons in the left corner that help you determine which application you are using. For example, if you are viewing a website through Internet Explorer, there will be an IE logo in the corner. On the right side are three buttons. The furthest right is the "Close Window" button, which completely closes that application window. The middle "Restore" button switches between a smaller window and a full version of the window and the "Minimize" button moves the window to your taskbar.
Effects
You can change the colors of your title bars in Windows in just a few steps. Start by right-clicking a blank area of your desktop. Click on "Properties" and then click the "Appearance" tab. Click the "Advanced" button, and then choose the "Active" or "Inactive" title bar option from the drop-down menu under "Item." Choose the colors you want and click "Apply."
Expert Insight
You can double-click your title bar, and it will quickly restore down or maximize the window. You can also "grab" the title bar by clicking on it with your mouse, and holding the mouse button down, drag the window to another location on the screen. If you somehow move the window so that the title bar is not showing, you can press Alt+Space and then press the M key. You will now be able to use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move your window back into place.
Potential
You can install several utilities to spruce up your title bar. One utility, called "Title Bar Reader," will display your choice of text types in the title bar. For example, you can chuckle at jokes or learn health tips. "Title Bar Browser Timer" will display a timer with your desired amount of time. When your time is up, a pop-up window notifies you. Moreover, no download is required. You can find links to these utilities in the "Resources" section of this article.
Considerations
If you want Windows to display the full file path in the title bar, follow these steps. Open "My Computer" and choose "Folder Options" from the "Tools" menu. Go to the "View" tab and select the "Display Full Path in Title Bar" check box, and then click "Apply." If you want to quickly hide the title bar (and taskbar, at the bottom) press the F11 key. To bring it back, simply press F11 again.
