Calculate Mail Delivery

Mail can be delivered quickly if you pay more.

If you're planning to send a letter or parcel through the mail, the two factors that are important to you are the price it will cost and the length of time it will take. If there is no urgency to what you are sending, you may not be too interested in how long it will be in transit. But if what you're sending is time sensitive, the postal service's mail delivery methods will be crucial to understand.

Instructions

1. Get whatever you are planning to send through the mail, whether it's a letter or a package, completely sealed and ready to send. If you're sending an envelope, you'll simply have to seal it. If you're sending a package, make sure the contents are secure with bubble wrap, then tape the box closed. Label the letter or package with your address in the sender's location on the top left. Label the destination information in the center of the envelope or package.

2. Take the package to the nearest United States Postal Service (USPS) post office and speak to a post office clerk about mail delivery and shipping times. The clerk will weigh your package and provide you with several cost- and time-related options for shipping it.

3. Choose among standard mail, express mail, priority mail, first-class mail or parcel post. Standard mail has no guaranteed delivery time, but is typically between two and nine days in the United States. Express mail can be delivered by 10 a.m. or 3 p.m. the following day, or by 3 p.m. in two days, depending on how much you wish to pay. Priority mail has no guarantee, but it's an expedited version of standard mail. Priority mail typically arrives anywhere in the United States in two to three days, as does first-class mail. Parcel post typically takes two to nine days to be received anywhere in the United States, but for more money, you can expedite your parcel.

4. Consider putting your item in a flat rate envelope or box. The USPS sells many sizes of flat rate envelopes and boxes, which are shipped for a flat rate regardless of how much they weigh. The clerk will be able to provide you with flat rate options for your package.

5. Ask for tracking information for whatever mail delivery method you select. Depending on the method you use, you will be given a tracking number that you can enter into the USPS's website daily to see where your package currently is and when it has been received.
