Sports marketing sales representatives are integral to the promotion of various sporting activities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were a total of 1,200 individuals working as arts, entertainment and sports promoters. The BLS places those working in this field in the larger category of agents and business managers of artists, performers and athletes. Salaries earned by those working in sports marketing tend to vary by location and other factors such as who the sales rep works for.


Average Salary


The average salary of those promoting sporting events and other similar events was $66,290 per year, as of May 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau indicates that the average salary for those working in the arts, entertainment and recreation industry as a whole was much higher. According to the bureau, the average overall salary for the industry was $89,840 per year in 2010.


Pay Scale


Placing the average salary of sports sales marketing reps within the larger pay scale for business managers and agents of artists, athletes and other entertainers can provide some additional insight. According to the BLS, the median salary for those working in this field was $63,130, indicating that sports marketing sales reps tend to earn salaries in the upper 50 percent of the pay scale. Those in the middle 50 percent of the pay scale made salaries ranging from $39,770 to $113,580 per year, with the highest paid reps making $166,400 or more per year.


Location


Location also provides some indication of what sports marketing sales representatives can expect to make. According to the BLS, the highest paid professionals in this field worked in the state of California and earned an average salary of $116,280 per year. The second highest paid reps worked in Connecticut, earning an average salary of $106,270. Those working in New York earned an average salary of $98,740 per year.


Job Outlook


According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs in the arts, entertainment and recreation industries should grow by about 15 percent during the period from 2008 to 2018. This growth is expected to occur largely in the fitness industry with a renewed emphasis upon the benefits of exercise. Sporting events continue to remain a popular part of American culture and should continue to fuel some of the growth in the sports marketing field.
