Making Baby Burp Cloths

Choose a colorful, decorative fabric for your burp cloths.

Burp cloths protect your clothing while you feed and burp a baby, in the event that the baby spits up. Burp cloths can also be used for general wiping up as the baby gets older. By making your own burp cloths, you can customize the size and style. Handmade burp cloths can be made to coordinate to the baby's nursery or to the colors in clothing that you typically wear. While you can stitch burp cloths by hand, a sewing machine makes the project quicker and easier.

Instructions

1. Determine a shape and size for your finished burp cloth. You can make a rectangle, square or concave pattern. Calculate the amount of fabric needed by multiplying the length by the width.

2. Measure one decorative piece of fabric and one soft piece slightly larger than the size of your finished burp cloth. Use a straight edge to make straight lines for square or rectangular shapes. If you are making a circular or concave burp cloth, cut a pattern from newspaper and cut the fabric along the pattern. Cut the pieces out.

3. Place the front sides of the fabrics together, and align the edges. Pin the pieces together so that they stay stable during sewing.

4. Sew the edges of the burp cloth around the edges, leaving a 2-inch opening.

5. Turn the burp cloth right side-out by pushing the fabric through the opening.

6. Push any of the raw fabric edges on the unfinished seam into the hole. Thread a needle and sew the unfinished gap closed. Tie off the thread and trim excess.
