Statewide


Barbers working throughout New York earned an average of $22,790 per year as of the end of the first quarter of 2010, according to the NYSDL. Salaries in the state were more than 18 percent below the national average, which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported as $27,930 per year as of 2010. Entry level barbers in New York made an average of $18,530 per year, while those with the most experience averaged $24,930 annually. Besides salaries, New York barbers may earn tips equal to a percentage of the cost of the services that they perform.


Hudson Valley


Barbers in the Hudson Valley region of New York received an average of $22,600 per year as of the end of the first quarter of 2010 explains the NYSDL. Mean ages in the region were just $190 less than the statewide average. Starting salaries for barbers in the Hudson Valley averaged $18,720 per year. The most experienced barbers in the area made an average of $24,540 annually. The Hudson Valley region consists of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties.


Long Island


Barbers working on Long Island were the highest paid statewide as of the end of the first quarter of 2010, reports the NYSDL. Salaries in the city averaged $25,040 per year, approximately 10 percent more than the statewide mean rate of pay. New barbers in Long Island received starting salaries that averaged $19,150 per year, while the most experienced barbers in the region enjoyed salaries that averaged $27,990 annually.


New York City


Barbers in New York City were the lowest paid as of the end of the first quarter of 2010, according to the NYSDL. Salaries in the five boroughs averaged $22,360 per year, about 19 percent below the statewide average. Entry level wages in New York City were an average of $18,500 annually, just $30 less per year than the statewide starting average. The most experienced barbers in New York City earned $40 less than the average for their peers across the state at $24,290 annually.
