Negotiate a raise at your annual performance review.


An annual review at work could be cause for some stress. However, it could also be an opportunity for you to negotiate a raise. Here is negotiate a salary increase at an annual review.


Instructions


1. Practice what you are going to say to your boss before your annual review even begins. Don't be afraid to write down some notes and bring them into your annual review.


2. Bring a notebook into your annual review with you. Be sure to ask your boss if it's alright that you take a few notes while your boss is talking. This way, you can make points and counterpoints when attempting to negotiate a salary increase.


3. Let your boss say everything that he has to say. Remember that the first point of an annual review is to review your performance as a worker. Let your boss both compliment and criticize before you even mention a salary increase. This is where you'll want to be sure to take careful notes.


4. Wait to see if your boss is going to offer you a salary increase. Many times during an annual review, your boss will actually offer you a raise without you having to ask. If the raise that you have been offered is less than you had expected, don't be afraid to tell your boss why you deserve a little more.


5. Explain to your boss why you deserve a raise once your boss has either finished talking or has offered you a salary increase. Bring up points such as how long you've been with this particular company. Admit the weaknesses that you exhibited when you first began your job. Then, tell your boss how you have improved upon those things since you first started.


6. Examine your notes and mention anything that you haven't before. Remember what your boss said to you during your annual review and answer any questions or concerns she may have.


7. Never become confrontational with your boss. If your boss disagrees with what you have said during your annual review, calmly and politely explain why you believe your boss is incorrect. Getting an attitude with your boss is never a good idea, especially when you're trying to negotiate a salary increase.


8. Remember the 5 to 10 minute rule. Chances are, if you haven't negotiated your salary increase in 5 to 10 minutes, it's not happening.
