Build A Display Case With A Post

Families love to display their trophies and medals. It's a silent way to express pride in the accomplishments of a daughter, son, Mom or Dad. This display case mounted on a pole can be placed in any room in the house and moved from place to place as desired.

Instructions

1. Assemble the base by inserting the un-threaded end of the 1 1/2-inch galvanized pipe into the umbrella stand. Set the retention screw at the base of the umbrella stand tightly with pliers. Thread the 3 1/2-inch cast metal floor flange on the threaded end of the 1 1/2-inch galvanized pipe to be sure it mounts correctly. Remove the floor flange. It will be mounted on the bottom plywood section of the display box. Paint the galvanized pipe to match the umbrella stand.

2. Cut two pieces of the cabinet grade plywood, 24 inches-by-24 inches, to form the top and bottom of the display case. Use the carpenter square to be sure the pieces are square and true. Draw diagonal lines from corner to corner on one side of one plywood piece. This plywood section will be the bottom of the display case. The crossed lines will be used to center the flange plate on the bottom of the display case. Sand the edges with fine sand paper on a sanding block. Stain or paint all surfaces on the top plywood piece. Stain or paint the top side and edges of the bottom plywood section. Wait until paint or stain is dry before assembling the display box.

3. Cut the Plexiglas to size before removing the protective paper. Cut two pieces 24 inches-by-24 inches to form the sides of the display case. Cut two pieces 24 inches-by-24 1/2 inches to form the front and back of the display case. Sand all exposed edges of the Plexiglas with fine sandpaper. Buff the edges with a buffing wheel if you want them to be clear and polished.

4. Drill three 1/8-inch holes at quarter points along the opposite edges of the two pieces of Plexiglas measuring 24-by-24 inches. Center these holes 3/8-inches from the edge of the Plexiglas. Drill three 1/8-inch holes on both 24 1/2-inch edges of the remaining pieces. Center these holes 3/8-inches from the edge of the Plexiglas.

5. Center the 3 1/2- inch floor flange on the "X" marked piece of plywood. Use the diagonal lines to locate the four screw holes. With the lines visible through the screw holes, be sure the "X" is centered in the hole that will receive the 1-1/2 inch galvanized pipe. Mount the 3-1/2 inch floor flange with four #8 screws.

6. Be sure the plywood section with the floor flange is facing out before mounting the Plexiglas sections to the plywood. Align the two 24-by-24 inch Plexiglas panels to opposite sides of the plywood sections, mark and drill pilot holes for the screws. Attach the Plexiglas to the plywood sections with #5 round head brass screws. Repeat this step for the 24 1/2-inch Plexiglas panels to one open side of the display box. This piece of Plexiglas will overlap the first two pieces. Screw the display case on the threaded end of the vertical pole. Place the object(s) to be displayed in the case. Screw the final 24 1/2-inch Plexiglas panel in place after marking and drilling pilot holes for the screws.
