Marketing executives work in a wide range of industries, but their mission remains the same: to get customers to notice their company or client. Marketing executives handle an array of duties, from overseeing graphics to coming up with company mottos.

Marketing executives come up with innovative ways to advance their company. They must have a thorough understanding of the company's mission and stay on top of trends related to the industry. They also need a firm grasp of the different methods of advertising, so that they can promote the company's products and services on a variety of platforms. Marketing executives also play a role in the development of websites, brochures and signs related to the business. At times, they might manage a staff, depending on the size of the company for which they work.


Skills


Marketing executives need to be highly imaginative and energetic. They should have excellent communication skills, particularly if their job entails writing and editing material that is released to the press. Marketing executives must be organized, professional, driven, strong leaders and able to work well with others, because they often coordinate their efforts with upper management and executives from other departments, such as advertising and sales. And marketing execs typically need to possess at least basic knowledge of computers and design.


Background


Most marketing executives have at least a bachelor's degree, and some have a master's degree. Besides marketing, most executives focus on courses in advertising, communications, administration, business, management, media and maybe even design. Many marketing executives spend time in various forms of advertising or public relations before working in marketing.


Prospects


Opportunities for marketing executives should be solid for several years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, marketing executive jobs should grow by about 12 percent through 2018, because "marketing managers and their departments constitute some of the most important personnel in an organization." More than 175,000 workers were employed as marketing managers in 2008, the BLS reported.


Earnings


Marketing executives can be among the highest earners in the country. Much of it depends on their responsibilities, experience, industry and, of course, performance. According to the BLS, marketing executives earned a median salary of $108,580 in 2008. Those in the computer systems design industry earned $127,870, the BLS reported.
