Instructions
1. Enlist some help. The construction business is not likely one to do alone, so start the company with an equally handy business partner or workers.
2. Decide what you want. With yourself or your business partner, discuss what you want the business to accomplish, your areas of expertise and skill, service areas, where your business will be based, company goals and plans and if you need subcontractors or plan to handle all of the work yourself.
3. Create a name. With your partner or with the help of others, come up with a business name. Make sure it’s something unique, memorable and lets others know what your business is about.
4. Get legal. Before you start your business, get a business license and any other necessary paperwork you may need in your town. If you have other workers, you also might need insurance and services.
5. Get materials. Take inventory of what items you may already have and plan to use. Make a list of items and materials you will need and get them. Also plan to make a budget and get necessary business items like general office supplies, a filing system, scheduling books, service orders, receipts and other construction documents.
6. Promote your business. Make fliers, a website and business cards to place on area bulletin boards, in shops/restaurants and elsewhere. Take out advertisements with local media, phone books and other locations. Talk about your company with area residents and businesses and hopefully make some appointments.
7. Get to work. Start working on your scheduled appointments and keep promoting your business and seeking new appointments. Ask current clients for referrals and to keep your business in mind for future work.
