Stay Away From Advertising In Facebook

Facebook is free to users, which means it must rely on advertising to make money. Facebook advertising is generally inexpensive, so many advertisers buy advertising campaigns. They can target specific groups of users using Facebook, but some ads are annoying, repetitive, misleading or otherwise problematic. Though it's not possible to completely stop seeing advertisements on the site, you can avoid the annoying ones and minimize your contact with a great deal of Facebook advertising.

1. Avoid filling out the interests section on your Facebook profile. Advertisers frequently target people based on their Facebook hobbies. Though it may prove challenging, it's also wise to leave your birthday, location and sex off of your Facebook profile because these are other avenues through which advertisers choose people to whom to show ads. Your friends may also use this information to find you, though, so it's important to decide whether maximum social networking or minimum contact with advertisers is more important.


2. Disable Flash -- which many Facebook ads use -- on your Internet browser. Disabling Flash can also help your Internet run slightly faster. Different browsers have different methods for disabling Flash, but options for this program are typically located under "Options" or "Settings." When Flash is disabled, Flash ads won't show up at all. Instead, a button will show up in place of the ad that allows you to click to see the ad. Unless you click, you won't see the ad.


3. Give Facebook feedback on the ads you see. When you see an ad you don't want to see again, click the tiny "X" in the top right corner of the ad. A menu of options will pop up that allows you to click why the ad is problematic. In most cases, you won't see the ad again. This approach will not prevent you from seeing ads on Facebook, but it will ensure that the ads are for things in which you might actually have interest. Over time, it may lessen the frequency with which you see ads and the number of ads targeting you.
