Types of Caps for Beer Bottles
Bottle caps for beer and other drinks vary by manufacturer. Caps or closures depend on the bottle used for the beer. There are hundreds of bottle closure types, but the majority of beers only use a few types. The most popular closures offer reasonable prices and simple manufacturing. People choose some caps for style. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Cork
Corks come from the cork oak tree. This type of closure has been in use for thousands of years. Wine bottles, along with some beer bottles, commonly use cork. Cork is an elastic wood that assumes its prior shape after being compressed, so it creates a seal. Corks are porous, so some evaporation may occur. Wire holds beer corks down and prevents them from popping out. Foil and wax prevent the cork from creeping.
Threaded
Threaded caps are screw-on caps with a stopper that descends into the bottle. They consist of hard rubber or glass. Glass versions of the threaded cap are uncommon.
External Threaded
External threaded caps or screw-on caps are the familiar caps that screw on over the bottle. These caps are made of aluminum or plastic. Bottling machines place them on bottles.
Lightening Toggle
The lightening toggle is plastic cap with a rubber washer. A metal clasp holds it down and goes over the cap and around the neck of the bottle. This is ideal for beer, as the pressure from the carbonation will not push off the cap.
Crown Cap
Crown caps are metal caps that require a machine to attach to the bottle. They have corrugated sides that resemble a crown. They require a bottle opener to remove. William Painter patented this type of cap, which is more than 100 years old. Tools called bottle cappers cap bottles with a crown cap. These are vise-like tools that squeeze the cap on the bottle.
Kork-N-Seal
Kork-N-Seal caps are metal crown caps that have a metal loop around the base. The loop ends in a key that you can pull up to remove the cap or pull down to reseal the bottle by squeezing the metal ring.
Combination Stoppers
Combination stoppers are glass and cork stoppers. The cork seals the bottle and is capped by either a metal or glass decorative cap. The stoppers can also suffer from creep over time.
