Mail Forwarding Options

Mail forwarding services are available for temporary and permanent moves.

Mail forwarding is used when individuals, businesses or families leave their permanent residence to go on vacation or relocate. Contacting the United States Postal Service to give notice of the relocation or vacation is required. The minimum and maximum time limit for mail forwarding services depends on the type of service selected. The length of stay or whether or not the mail forwarding is permanent or temporary will determine the best mail forwarding option.

Premium Forwarding Service

Premium Forwarding Service offers a premium mail forwarding service for individuals or families traveling or away from permanent home or business mailing addresses for an extended period of time. The service works by forwarding mail to the temporary address. The service is domestic and does not apply to forwarding addresses out of the country. Mail from the primary mailing address is sent once a week via Priority Mail to the new temporary address. The mail service has a minimum time frame of two weeks and a maximum of one year. Enrollment in the service costs $15 and a weekly reshipment cost of $13.95 applies for as long as the service is activated. The service doesn’t change the permanent address on file and the temporary address is not released to third parties.

Individual Change of Address

Changing the address of an individual is another type of mail forwarding option available. A change of address form is filled out in a local post office or online at the USPS website for a $1 processing fee. Individual change of address forms apply to one member within a household who is moving to a new address or when multiple members of the household are moving to separate locations. An individual change of address normally takes two weeks to take effect. After the form is processed the post office will begin to forward the individuals mail to the new permanent address.

Family Change of Address

Submitting a change of address form for an entire household will forward all mail to a new address as long as the entire household is moving to the same address. A form is submitted to the local post office closest to the current permanent address and the mail for all the members of the family is effected. Change of Address forms can be filled out and submitted in person free of charge. There are options to have catalogs or publications forwarded or stopped once the change of address takes effect.

Change of Address for Businesses

Mail is forwarded from the old business address to the new address when the business moves. An authorized representative of the company has to put in the request to change the business address on file. Businesses have the option of submitting the change of address form online as well as in person. Identification will be verified. An email address is required as well as a start date for the online change of address form.
