Write a Letter to Ask for a Job Back
Perhaps you made the decision to leave your former job, or maybe your employer made that decision for you. Either way, at some point you might realize that job is where you belong. In this case, it might not be too late to ask for your job back. The best way to go about this sensitive process is with a polite, professional letter to your boss in which you explain why you believe you are still the best person for the position.
Instructions
1. Write a formal salutation addressing your boss by name, such as "Dear Mr. Johns." Follow with a brief introductory paragraph explaining what position you held at the company and during what dates and explain that you enjoyed your time at the position.
2. Write the body of the letter, beginning with an explanation of why you left the company. Regardless of the circumstances, maintain a positive tone and avoid displaying any bitterness or resentment. Explain what you have been doing in the time since you left, again with a positive spin, and point out how you've grown as a worker. Mention any recognition you've received or workshops you've attended.
3. Explain which position you want, be it your old job or a new position at the company, and, using specific examples, add why you believe you are now more qualified than ever to fulfill that job's duties.
4. Write the conclusion paragraph and thank your former employer for his time and consideration. Indicate that you would like to discuss any opportunities further and include your phone number and/or email address.
