The Salary Of A Motorcycle Sales Manager

Motorcycle sales managers help customers purchase motorcycles.


In 2011, motorcycle retailers saw a seven percent increase in the sale of highway motorcycles, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. Retailers may need to increase the number of motorcycle sales managers in response to this new demand. Motorcycles sales mangers utilize their leadership skills to manage a motorcycle dealership and its employees. In addition to managing salespersons, motorcycle managers must also assist customers and help them select a motorcycle model that meets their budget and needs.


Job Description


Like most other retail sales managers, motorcycle sales managers supervise and coordinate the activities of retail salespersons working in a motorcycle dealership. Their duties may include general administrative and management functions such as sales, customer service, employee training and recruitment. Additionally, these managers are required to have vast knowledge regarding the variety of models of motorbikes, motorcycles, and other sports racing vehicles. These managers are also responsible for advising customers about replacement motorcycle parts and repairs. Within the sales industry, these managers may hold supervisory positions such as sales manager, department manager, or shift supervisor.


Salary


According to 2010 data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the national annual mean salary for most retail sales managers was $39,890, which corresponds to a hourly wage of $19. Sales managers in the bottom 10th percentile for this profession earned an annual mean salary of $22,390, or an hourly wage of $10. Sales managers in the 90th percentile for this profession earned an annual mean salary of $60,900, or an hourly mean wage of $29.


Sales managers working specifically in the automobile and motor vehicle industry earned an annual mean salary of $72,290 or an hourly wage of $34, according to the BLS. This salary is significantly higher than the national average salary for sales managers working in other retails sectors such as clothing or shoes for instance.


According to cbsalary.com, motorcycle sales representatives earned a mean average salary of $32,064. Motorcycle salespersons and sales managers working in the top 25th percentile for this profession earn an average salary of $54,342.


Automobile and Motor Vehicle Sales Industry


According to the BLS, sales associates and sales managers who sold expensive items such as cars and motor vehicles, jewelry, furniture, and electronic equipment, generally earned more than salespeople selling other items. According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, motorcycle sales should continue to see growth through 2011. Sales managers working with popular scooters will see the biggest sales gains with a nearly 50 percent sales increase. Sales managers selling dual-purpose bikes, built for on- and off-highway use saw a sales increase of almost 25 percent. Increases in sales create opportunities for salespersons and motorcycle managers to earn extra income via commission.


Outlook


According to 2010 data published by the BLS, employment of sales worker supervisors in all industries is expected to grow by 5 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is slower than the national average for all other occupations. The bureau attributes this lull to the declining economy.
