Dns Lookup Process

Use network commands to discover IP addresses.

A Domain Name Server lookup can help you find a website's Internet Protocol (IP) address, which is a unique number such as 192.218.22.0 that identifies a computer on the Web. Whenever you type a domain name in your browser, the browser sends that name to a DNS. The DNS then converts the name into an IP and finds the website for you. By performing a DNS lookup on your computer, you can determine a website's URL name or IP address if you give it one of those two values.

Instructions

1. Click the Windows "Start" button and type "cmd." The Command window will open.

2. Type "nslookup xyz" in the Command window. Replace "xyz" with a domain name such as whitehouse.gov or google.com.

3. Press "Enter." Windows will return the IP address for the domain name.

4. Type "nslookup abc" in the Command window. Replace "abc" with an IP address such as 111.11.11.111.

5. Press "Enter." Windows will return the domain name for that IP address.
