Experience
More experience means a higher salary for bookkeepers, according to PayScale. As of September 2010, new bookkeepers can expect a beginning annual salary that ranges from $24,115 to $35,417. At one to four years of experience they receive $26,283 to $37,570, and at five to nine years they get $28,666 to $41,240. At 10 to 19 years they make $28,721 to $42,717, while workers with 20 years of experience or more can earn $30,540 to $44,840.
Location
The city of employment affects pay for bookkeepers, with New York offering the highest pay range at $33,681 to $46,715, followed by Los Angeles at $34,902 to $46,089. Those in Miami earn $27,098 to $37,153, while those in Houston make $31,243 to $44,787.
