Punk Rock Bedroom Ideas

The Mohawk is a commonly recognized punk symbol.

Use of a few proper items transforms a plain bedroom into a punk rock haven. Punk rock is an attitude, a music genre and a fashion statement. These three areas come together to define what punk is. With its height of popularity in the late 1970s, many punk items have a retro feel. For the punk lover, these items are cherished and displayed with pride. Does this Spark an idea?

The Union Jack

While the origins of punk music remains in debate, it is known that the first bands performing the genre were signed in the United Kingdom. The Damned received a recording contract in 1975 and released the first official punk album. They were quickly followed by other U.K. bands, including The Sex Pistols who had a charting song called "God Save the Queen." This early activity forever related the U.K. and punk.

The British flag, also known as the Union Jack, became the battle flag for many punkers. The flag may act as a focal point for a punk rock bedroom. Paint the flag on the ceiling or use it to cover the walls. Use an outline of it's three crossed bars to create a floor design. Rugs, bedding and curtains are available in the Union Jack pattern from various outlets.

Graffiti

The punk attitude is one of rebellion. This rebellion includes acts against society, typically in a non-violent way. Graffiti is one such act used by punkers to get their point across to society. Their words and symbols include skulls and the letter "A" surrounded by a circle to represent "anarchy." This non-verbal form of communication translates into decorations for a punk rock bedroom. Paint the walls of the room black or create a brick wall appearance. Allow the occupant to spray paint or airbrush words that relate to their inner punk. Use stencils for a neater or more precision appearance. Use fabric paints to graffiti on plain black or white bedding and curtains. Rugs and throws are also subject to the expression.

Spikes

Spikes play a role in punk culture. From spiking the hair into a Mohawk to wearing spiked jackets, collars and wrist gear, the apparatus is often associated with the punk world. Use spikes to give a punk look to a bedroom. Smooth stud-like spikes are available at hardware and home improvement stores. These are similar to common nails and are simply nailed into walls and other pieces. Make a chair rail around the room using the spikes. Add the spikes to bed posts and around the edges of other furniture in the room. Decorative spikes for fabric are available at fabric and craft stores. Add these spikes to bedding, curtains and throw pillows.
