Descriptions Of Outside Marketing Jobs

Going to any lengths for the sale.


Outside marketing job descriptions vary widely, based upon products, territory and position type. Rather than selling customers over the telephone or at their own place of business, outside marketing representatives promote their company at an expo, go door to door or business to business, or network in some way to meet customers wherever they congregate.


Travel


Many outside marketing representatives travel from one business to another or from one house to another, but some may operate as freelancers, and sell more than one company's product out of their own business as an affiliate would. Some jobs require travel locally, with the representative able to be at home at night. Other outside marketing jobs require overnight travel to other cities, states or even countries. When travel is required, it is common for job posters to use a percentage to indicate how often a prospective employee can expect to travel if she obtains that job. For example, travel 20 percent would mean that the employer is expecting that you will be in the plant or office 80 percent of the time and on the road 20 percent visiting customers.


Expenses


Certain expenses related to sales and marketing are considered to be tax write-offs in the form of tax deductions. The relationship and contract terms of marketing representatives dictate whether they must float the cost of these expenses (straight commission or contractor) or whether their employer will provide them with a company credit card or an expense reimbursement method. Keep track of mileage, phone and computer expenses, meals, hotels, airfare, and other related business expenses.


Income


Marketing and sales representatives often make good incomes compared to other jobs within an organization. This is because the hours are long, relationship building takes work, the stress is high, and the documentation requirements of being in sales are high. Wages can be paid by the piece, by the hour, by the profit margin, by the project, or by the overall account sales. Some outside marketing representatives are paid only commission, others are given wages plus commission, and some are paid an annual salary no matter how much they sell or don't sell. Vice presidents, directors and managers typically will have some type of bonus based upon overall sales; they may also have stock options or receive bonus trips or other perks.


Education and Opportunity


Outside marketing jobs can include working for aerospace, drug, automobile, computer, medical and other highly technical fields. They can also include representing food, meat, flower, dirt, mulch, plants, pet food, plastics and similar products. There are distributors, manufacturers, retailers and transportation avenues as well as advertising and public relations. Almost any product you can think of has someone behind the scenes developing a brand, a product label, a design, and packaging. Marketing jobs include analysts and strategists as well as those in point-of-sale merchandising.
