The Average Salary Of Ad Sales

Advertising sales agents are responsible for selling advertising space on billboards, in publications, on websites and commercial airtime on radio and television stations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the field will grow by 20 percent through 2016, resulting in the creation of 35,000 new jobs for advertising sales agents.

The average annual salary for advertising sales agents in May 2008 was $53,170.


Largest Employers


In May 2008, the largest employers of advertising sales agents were advertising companies, newspapers and other periodicals, and radio and television broadcasting, where agents averaged annual salaries of $57,670, $46,290, and $54,110, respectively.


Highest Paying Employers


Some of the highest paying employers of advertising sales agents in 2008 were commercial equipment wholesalers, security and commodity brokers, office administration service providers, and motion-picture production companies. Agents employed in these areas averaged between $67,500 and $75,450.


Largest Areas


In May 2008, the areas of New York, District of Columbia, Montana, Vermont and North Dakota had the highest concentrations of advertising sales agents. In these states, agents averaged $63,150, $65,320, $33,550, $42,980, and $46,010, respectively.


Highest Paying Areas


The areas where advertising sales agents earned the highest average salaries in 2008 were Connecticut, District of Columbia, New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Agents working in these states averaged between $61,710 and $71,820.
