Business Marketing Degrees

Business marketing, simply put, is the selling of goods to a client, which then either re-sells them or uses them in their own products or services. A business marketing degree encompasses the techniques used to market a company's products or services. Degrees in this discipline range from associate's, appropriate for an entry-level job in the marketing department, to an advanced degree that can propel the graduate into an executive position.

Associate's Degree

One type of business marketing degree is the associate's degree. This is a two-year degree program that is available through online schools, technical or community colleges. A business marketing graduate with this type of degree primarily works in the sales department of a corporation. Some technical schools have an accelerated degree program that can be completed in 12 to 18 months, but this business marketing program is for full-time students. An associate degree in business marketing prepares the graduate to immediately enter the workforce.

Bachelor's Degree

A bachelor's degree in business marketing is available at a four-year college or university. Some accredited, online-focused schools, such as University of Phoenix or Westwood College, offer business marketing students bachelor's degrees through distance learning programs. Typically, the first half of this program is spent taking required core courses, such as math, history, social studies and English. The last two years of the curriculum cover the techniques and skills utilized by a marketing department, such as commercial presentations on television or radio and print media.

Master's Degree

A master's degree is available for students seeking to advance their education in business marketing. Most of these degrees are Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees, with specialties in marketing. This type of business marketing degree prepares a graduate to work in the marketing department of a corporation or as a marketing manager. Coursework includes integrated marketing techniques and advanced sales tools. According to AllBusinessSchools.com, the average income for a marketing manager is $87,640, as of 2010, while the starting salary for a person with just a bachelor's degree in business marketing is $33,873.

Doctorate Degree

The last type of degree available to a student seeking a business marketing degree is a doctorate. Commonly known as a Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) in business marketing, this type of degree typically takes an additional three years to complete after a master's degree. Studies involve advanced marketing research methods as well as working as an intern in a corporate marketing department. Most DBA graduates either go into education at the university level or work as executives in the corporate environment.
