History Of Subway Sandwiches Franchise

History of Subway Sandwiches Franchise

It's very hard to drive through any major city without seeing numerous Subway Sandwiches locations. The restaurant has been in business for over 40 years and advanced from a single store operation to a franchise. Subway Sandwiches now competes with some of the largest fast food chain restaurants such as McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's. They offer a variety of food including subs, salads, soups and personal pizzas as well.

How It Started

The Subway Sandwiches franchise was started in 1965. It was started by Fred DeLuca, who ran the day to day operations of the business and Dr. Pete Buck, who helped finance the start-up of the business. Subway Sandwiches started with a $1,000 investment by Dr. Buck. In 1974, the company had 16 restaurants in Connecticut, and started franchising the next year. Mr. DeLuca's friend Brian Dixon was the first franchise owner.

Franchise Sandwich

The BMT is known as the franchise sandwich for Subway Sandwiches. It was originally named after the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit System. To fit the theme of the restaurant though, the BMT became the acronym for "Biggest, Meatiest and Tastiest in 1975.

The Six Inch Sub Appears

For its first 11 years in business, Subway Sandwiches only sold subs that were one foot in length. In 1977 though, they introduced the smaller version of their subs. Back then it was known as the "Snak" sandwich, and that is what is known as the six-inch sub today at Subway Sandwiches.

Salads Join The Menu

In 1980, Subway added its first menu items that were not submarine sandwiches. This addition to the menu was the salad. In 1980, the salad offered at Subway Sandwiches was the traditional garden salad. Three years later "Entrepreneur Magazine" named Subway the number one restaurant in their subs category.

Expansion

In 1984 Subway Sandwiches opened its first international location. This location was in Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. The next year Subway Sandwiches expanded outside the continental United States again, but this time it was much closer in Puerto Rico.

Complete U.S. Coverage

It was not until 1989 that Subway Sandwiches had a location in every state throughout the United States. That was a big year for Subway, as it opened its 3,000th store that year as well. Subway appeared in the movie "Lethal Weapon 2" that year, and opened its first store inside a grocery store.

Jared Becomes Famous

In the year 2000 the world was introduced to Jared Fogle. He was the customer that Subway used in an advertising campaign to emphasis the healthy nature it promoted by eating at Subway. This was the year that Subway started to introduce its line of fat free sandwiches.
