Internal communications managers work to keep employees informed.
One hallmark of a successful organization is having employees who believe in the company's mission and processes and work to carry them out. Internal communication is key to creating this kind of workforce; its aim is to clear up unnecessary ambiguity in the workplace to ensure employees are faithful and that their goals are in line with the company's. Internal communications managers see employees as their prime audience and work to keep them updated on all the company's happenings.
Responsibilities
Internal communications managers are responsible for developing and maintaining an internal communications program that pinpoints a company's strategic messages and effectively delivering those messages. They use various forms of communication, including emails, newsletters, training programs, websites and intranets and employee forums. Internal communications managers also must work with other managers within the company, counseling them on the best ways to communicate information to the employees. Ideally, these managers will create a culture that can ensure employees will carry out the goals of a company.
Skills
Internal communications managers must have solid writing skills so they can deliver clear, targeted messages to employees. They also must have strong people skills and the ability to communicate with employees at all levels in the organization. In larger corporations, internal communications managers are often expected to communicate with all employees, even those who might be based overseas. Managers must also have exceptional computer skills and have experience in programs such as Microsoft Office and InDesign.
Measurement
The key to being a successful internal communications manager is having the ability to measure the effectiveness of the implemented communications programs. This can be done through surveys, focus groups or other methods. The internal communications manager should have experience in evaluating programs and identifying ways to adjust the programs if necessary.
Experience
Internal communications managers should have at least a bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations or a related field. Companies will require that these managers have significant experience under their belts; most will ask that the managers have about five to 10 years of experience in the communications field, with at least three years of experience in internal communications. They should also have solid experience using multiple communications platforms, including digital, print and events.
Salary
According to Indeed.com, as of 2010 the average salary of internal communications managers is $78,000, a salary that is 18% higher than the average salaries for all jobs across the country.
