800 numbers allow you to reach businesses or individuals without paying long-distance fees. The telephone charge is paid by the called party. Toll-free 800 numbers are most often used by businesses, especially in telemarketing and customer service. Toll-free numbers are also becoming popular for personal use. You can obtain a "vanity" toll-free 800 number that spells out your name or company. Finding a 800 number can be difficult because they're not published in the local phone book. Other resources are available to help you locate an 800 number.
Instructions
1. Locate the exact name of the business or individual you wish to contact. Make sure the spelling is correct.
2. Call the toll-free 800 number directory assistance hotline at 800-555-1212. Give the telephone operator the name of the business to learn if it's listed. The database contains the 800 numbers only for subscribers who choose to be included.
3. Visit the website of the business you are trying to contact. Type the business name into a Google search window if you don't know the exact website address. Click on "Contact Us" once you're on the website for the toll-free telephone number.
4. Use an online toll-free telephone number directory such as Get Human or the National Toll-Free Directory (see Resources) to find the 800 number. Type in the name of the business or individual for whom you're searching.
