1. Take a course in fashion merchandising. You may take this online or at an accredited 2-year local college. Some universities offer 4-year programs as well.
2. Decide exactly what area of fashion merchandising you want to work in. This can be opening your own boutique, selling your designs to existing stores, large or small, becoming a buyer for existing stores or many other choices.
3. Create a portfolio. Include pictures of your own unique designs. Have this available even after you get your dream job. When the market changes, change your portfolio. Succeed in fashion merchandising by being a step ahead.
4. Send out resumes to the companies you want to work with. Design your own resume and show off your talents. Include samples of your work.
5. Tune into the fashion market every day. Trends change very quickly and suddenly. Have new designs ready to implement AS the change happens.
6. Refresh your talents with an additional course to keep up with changes. Travel abroad and within the country frequently. Know the fashion world inside and out to succeed in fashion merchandising.
