The Best Structural Engineering Universities

Structural engineers work with any load-bearing structure.

Structural engineering is a specialty of civil engineering. A person who wishes to become a structural engineer must complete his bachelor's degree in civil engineering before applying to a graduate program in structural engineering. For some people continuity of education makes staying in the same college for both under graduate and graduate programs the best bet. For a person willing to transfer, some schools have outstanding graduate degree programs without regard to where the student got his undergraduate degree.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Rensselaer does not distinguish a structural engineering master or PhD from a civil engineering degree, but offers graduate level classes that allow a student to get the necessary education to work as a structural engineer. For most students the masters program requires two years to complete, and the PhD program requires three years, or one year for someone who already holds a master's degree.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois offers a joint masters degree program that allows a student to get simultaneous masters degrees in civil engineering and structural architecture. Students must have completed the first semester of first year masters courses before applying to the joint degree program, and participation is not guaranteed. Students must demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to receive entrance into the joint program. Graduation from the program requires 78 graduate level credit hours.

Purdue University

Purdue's masters program has built-in flexibility to allow students to focus on the specialties they have the most interest in, and to prepare the students for real life professional engineering practice. This approach has led to Purdue regularly ranking as one of the top 10 civil engineering universities in the United States.

University of California - San Diego

The Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD has a dedicated structural engineering department. It is one of few Universities that offers an undergraduate structural engineering degree in addition to the masters and PhD level programs. The program uses a multi-disciplinary program to give students necessary classes in civil engineering, aerospace and marine engineering with a focus on the structural components of each discipline. Both students and faculty involved in the program have won numerous awards for excellence.
