Make A Good Commercial

TV commercials are the backbone of product sales. Commercial spots during shows that have high ratings can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to run, but companies are willing to pay the expense to reach the audience that such shows offer--if the commercial is a good one. Learn how you can make a good commercial that won't make viewers turn the channel.

1. Know your audience and target it logically. Appeal to the gender and age group you want to sell to. You won't use sexy women to sell a product to women unless the goal is to leave the impression that the product might help female viewers look like the women in your commercial.


2. Make a commercial that doesn't feel like a commercial. Think the way a movie director thinks. Tell a story visually. Engage your audience members by getting them interested in a character in your commercial. Make your audience want to follow the central character and have the character lead the the audience to your product.


3. Create a story. You can do this within the scope of a 30-second commercial. Use visuals to move the story forward. You want your audience members to be so involved in following the story that they aren't aware they're watching a commercial. You can sell a product without selling it hard.


4. Be visually appealing. Shoot your commercial artistically and appropriately. Enhance sound effects. If you're selling a burger, let your audience hear it sizzle. If you're selling air conditioning, create visuals that will make your audience feel the chill.


5. Create mystery. Catch your audience off guard by shooting a commercial that doesn't mention the product until the very end, almost in passing. Use symbolism and metaphor throughout, then reveal the product at the end of the commercial. This approach leaves your audience trying to work out how the commercial fits the product, which keeps the product in your audience's thoughts longer.
