Promotional Postcard Ideas

Postcards are a relatively inexpensive way to promote a business or event.

Promotional postcards are an inexpensive way to get the word out about your business, event, charity or product. Postcards are better than business cards for advertising because their larger size allows greater flexibility for design, artwork and creative expression. Postcards can be mailed to interested parties, displayed on bulletin boards and distributed at public functions.

Half Tones

A half tone is a photograph that has been made semi-transparent, so that it can be printed behind text without making the text unreadable. This technique is very useful for materials such as postcards where space is limited. You can include a half-tone photograph of a relevant scene, with text overlaying it, and effectively send two messages in a single space. An example of this technique would be a postcard advertising a market garden. The text could include information about the produce offered, location and hours of operation. And the half-tone could be an image of the garden, giving the reader a more complete idea of what was being promoted.

Photography

Postcards are an ideal promotional medium for visual artists, because they provide an opportunity to show work in a very non-symbolic way. The postcard portrays the actual thing that you are trying to sell as a photographer, artist or sculptor. High-quality photographs reproduce well on postcards, and even if the scale is much smaller than the original, give the potential buyer a good sense of the kind of work that you do. For this kind of postcard, the glossy front of the card can be image of your best work, unimpeded by text, and the back of the card can contain information about the work and the artist.

Novelty Cards

Novelty cards cost more because of more complex production techniques, but they are often worth it because of the memorable message they leave in the potential customer's mind. Some examples of novelty cards might be a postcard with a mylar finish that makes it look like a mirror, a postcard in a novelty shape or with parts cut out of it, or a postcard with a folding flap on the front that needs to be lifted in order to read part of the message. Novelty cards are most effective when the gimmick is directly related to the product or service being offered, for example the mirror idea being used to advertise a beauty salon.
