Information On Bubble Tea

What started as an after-school snack in Taiwan and Southeast Asia during the 1980s has now migrated around the globe. The appearance of bubble tea may surprise first-timers, but the tea is growing in popularity as an alternative to coffee and sodas. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Origin of Bubble Tea

Bubble tea is said to have originated in Taiwan in the early 1980s. Tea stands were popular as an after-school treat and soon vendors began experimenting with adding flavorings to the tea base. To keep the tea consistency smooth, vendors shook the tea and flavor shots together. This action produced bubbles and produced the name: bubble tea.

Ingredients

The original bubble tea contained your choice of chilled tea (jasmine, green or black), infused with a fruit, nut or latte-type flavoring, milk and honey to taste. After 1983, tapioca was introduced, and bubble teas now contain tapioca beads either black or white in color along with the original ingredients. Flavors are endless and combinations of 3 or more flavor shots are common. Soy milk and sugar-free options are also available.

Tea Stand Locations

Bubble tea stands are opening all across the globe. Stands can be found in malls, shopping strips or as independent shops. Bubble tea is also often served at various Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and other Asian cuisine restaurants. Ethnic areas of major cities will often have bubble tea stands.

Benefits of Drinking Bubble Tea

Bubble tea is a refreshing alternative to coffee, high-sugar sodas and high-fat milkshakes. The teas that form the basis for the drink contain healthy antioxidants and depending on the flavors you choose to add (fruit puree, nut, etc.) can form an energy-packed, satisfying drink with a twist. Choose soy milk and no added sugar and a smaller amount of tapioca for a healthier version of this delicious drink.

Other Names for Bubble Tea

Bubble tea is also known as boba, pearl milk tea, BBT and tapioca ball drink, to name a few.
