Build A Retail Space

Identify retail needs and translate them into interior design spaces.

Store design and layout is important to a new retail business. A well-designed retail shop considers customer traffic patterns. It also seeks to maximize inventory sales for each foot of floor space. The total amount of selling space needed will ultimately be determined by the type of business and retail merchandise being sold.

Instructions

1. Identify retail space needs. Refer to the company's retail business plan to identify retail departments that will require space allocation. Space should be built out for each department and indicate the required size for each location. It should also identify retail fixtures and other permanent structures that will need to be designed into the retail interior. Account for the number of permanent retail fixtures that will be needed for the merchandise. This includes such items as retail display cases, shelving, tables and clothing racks. Also, determine the amount of space needed for checkout services and racks for impulse items near the checkouts.

2. Allocate back office space. This will include inventory warehousing and office space for performing administrative and accounting tasks. The specific type of business will determine other specific needs. For instance, a clothing store will also have to consider dressing room areas. Space requirements should also include necessities such as employee bathrooms.

3. Design store layout. When considering layout, the atmosphere should be dictated by the type of business and tastes of targeted customers. A new retail space may require various levels of build-out, depending on existing structures. For significant custom build-out designs consider using interior design software that provides graphic imaging for floor plans and fixture positioning.
