Troubleshoot A Wireless Dvr

A DVR records video without needing DVD disks.

Digital video recorders (DVRs) record video media to an internal drive. Dozens of companies manufacture and incorporate them into a variety of gadgets, from television boxes for the saving of TV shows to security camera systems for backing up security footage. Wireless DVRs offer all of these benefits, sans wires. Though the design and technical specifications will vary according to the specific DVR model, several general troubleshooting strategies can help you identify problems and fix them to get your DVR back in working order.

Instructions

1. Verify that the wireless DVR appliance power button is switched on and that it's connected to a power source if it's not recording and none of its indicator lights are glowing. Some devices connect to an outlet. Others, such as those used in security camera systems, run off of an internal battery and occasionally need recharging.

2. Check that your wireless network is running if the DVR is powered on but can't connect to a media source. If the device uses a wireless Internet network (WiFi), make sure your Internet connection is active and your router and modem are plugged in and running. If the device uses another type of wireless technology, such as Bluetooth, check that it's properly paired to any cameras, computers or TVs from which it's recording.

3. Check the DVR's drive capacity if the DVR's panel displays a recording error or if the device stops recording midway through a recording session. The drive capacity varies widely according to the specific device. Some DVRs can be expanded using flash memory cards. Otherwise, if the DVR's drive has reached capacity, connect the device to a computer and download media off of the drive to free up space. If you're not sure do this, consult the manual for your specific DVR.

4. Contact the manufacturer of the device if you still cannot get the DVR to function correctly. The manual will outline any pertinent contact information for the company's technical support line. In most cases, servicing or replacement is free or discounted if the device still falls within its warranty terms.
