Legally Put Fliers On Cars

You can advertise your product, service or event with fliers if you are on a limited budget. Apart from the cost of the paper, this method of advertising is free. Although many people consider fliers on their cars a source of annoyance, some find the information they contain useful. However, you could be subject to fines if your city has laws against it, or you could be subject to legal action if you post on private property. It is best to obtain as much information as you can to ensure that you are posting your fliers legally.

Instructions

1. Find out what the local laws permit. Some cities prohibit posting fliers in public areas and may consider it littering. Your city may also have laws against solicitation. Visit your local City Hall to inquire. You can also conduct a search on your city's website. For instance, Los Angeles provides information on the various rules and regulations for the city in the "Municipal Codes" section of its website.

2. Obtain a permit, if necessary. Even if your city allows people to post fliers in public places, you may need a permit to do so legally. Such a permit may allow you to post fliers on cars parked on public property, such as streets. Contact City Hall for more information.

3. Contact the owners of private properties. If you have obtained a permit, it will only give you the right to post fliers on public property. If you would like to place them on cars parked on private property, such as the parking lot of a retail store, it would be best to obtain permission from the manager or owner before you do so. Note, however, that some owners will not allow you to post your fliers if they consider you a source of competition because of the product, service or event you are advertising.

4. Post your fliers safely. It is not safe for drivers if you place your flier on the windshield of the car. Many people will not notice it until they start driving, which is dangerous and inconvenient. You could be held liable if the driver suffers an injury as a result. It is best to place your flier in a spot where the driver will notice it before entering the car, such as on the window on the driver's side.
