Supplies For Painting Glass Windows

Reverse painting on windows requires special brushes.

Window painting, which is often used by businesses to celebrate holiday themes and attract customer attention, is an inexpensive way to decorate a normally unadorned surface. Much more of a time investment than a financial one, the supplies needed to window paint are minimal and inexpensive. Before undergoing a window painting project, it is a good idea to pre-determine the layout of your design by sketching it on paper as a reference point.

Acrylic or Enamel Paints

You will want to base your choice of window paint on whether you intend your artwork to be temporary or permanent. Acrylic paints are best for temporary glass paintings, while enamel paints are necessary for permanent work. Artists hired to paint seasonal or holiday themes on store-front windows opt for acrylic paints, and avoid the use of sealant, which would make prompt removal of the artwork extremely difficult.

Painters Tape

The quick act of applying painter's tape around the borders of your window will go a long way towards preventing the window frame from getting accidentally painted. Simply apply the adhesive side of the painter's tape to the trim around the window, and run your fingertip along the tape to ensure that it is adhered to the trim. After your artwork has dried, gently peel the tape off (aggressively removing the tape can rip the paint off of woodwork). In a pinch, masking tape will also work to protect window trim from paint.

One-Stroke Brushes

For painting on a window from the inside of a space, you will need to use utilize the reverse painting technique, in which the elements of a picture which you would normally paint last are painted first, working backwards. This ensures that the artwork will look correct when seen from outside.

For this purpose, one-stroke brushes--so-called because of their ability to blend, shade and highlight all in one stroke--are necessary. The main difference between a one-stroke brush and a regular paintbrush is that the former has a longer length of filament, giving one-stroke brushes more flexibility in paint application.

Painting a window from the outside, however, requires no special brushes or painting techniques.
