Advantages & Disadvantages Of Voicemail Marketing

Make sure the script for your voicemail marketing campaign is clear and succinct.

When you're deciding on marketing strategies for your company, cost effectiveness is a key factor. Measuring how far a campaign can extend your reach with new customers is another factor. While social media and Internet campaigns are beginning to dominate some companies' strategies, many companies still rely on the phone as a way of reaching prospects. Voicemail marketing has several advantages and drawbacks, and must be carefully handled.

Less Intrusive

Voicemail is a more respectful way of cold calling and is less intrusive than a live call. The recipient can listen to a message at her leisure. She also is more likely to hear what you have to say, rather than hurry to get you off the phone.

Easy To Ignore

Your message runs the risk of being instantly deleted. Unless you carefully word your message and draw the listener in, she can easily erase your message without ever listening to it. Some companies attempt to counter this by having voicemail campaigns that send several different cumulative messages, in the hope that at least one message will be heard.

Low Cost

Because a voicemal message is automated, with a single message going out to many targets, voicemail marketing is much cheaper than employing people to make live calls. Your company should have a mechanism in place to determine whether the low cost is actually more cost-effective. You can do this by tracking the number of sales that result directly from voicemail messages.

Less Interactive

If the prospect has questions about your product or service, or if he's ready to buy or sign up, he has to take an extra step to do so or to get the information he needs. You will probably lose some sales because of either the recipient's inactivity or inability to remember the call-back number. This is one area in which live calls have a big advantage over voicemail campaigns.

Regulated

When you're using voicemail campaigns, be aware of regulatory and legal issues. Most states have a Do Not Call register in operation, and you have to be very careful to comply with its restrictions. You may be fined or otherwise sanctioned if you call homeowners who have indicated they do not wish to be contacted.
